Dairy Award

Recognizing excellence across the dairy industry.

Dairy Award is GEO Dairy’s recognition program for outstanding dairy products, businesses, professionals, innovation and performance across the complete dairy value chain.

Beginning in Georgia, the program is designed to make excellence more visible, encourage continuous improvement and celebrate the people and businesses contributing to a stronger dairy industry.

Current award cycle: to be announced

Make Good Performance Visible

Many of the people and businesses that strengthen an industry work largely outside public attention.

  1. A farmer

    may achieve exceptional herd performance.

  2. A cheesemaker

    may create an outstanding product.

  3. A veterinarian

    may transform animal-health outcomes.

  4. A processor

may substantially improve quality or sustainability.

  5. A young professional

    may introduce an important innovation.

Dairy Award creates a structured way to identify and recognize these achievements. The objective is not simply celebration. Recognition can encourage:

  • Better standards
  • Healthy competition
  • Professional pride
  • Innovation
  • Consumer awareness
  • Career development
  • Market visibility

What an industry recognizes helps communicate what that industry values.

Excellence Across the Whole Dairy Value Chain

Five major families give the Award room to grow without becoming confusing.

01Dairy Products

Recognizing outstanding finished dairy products.

  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Fermented dairy

  • Butter
  • Cream
  • Specialty dairy
  • Innovative products

A Structured Category System

At launch, the actual number of awards is kept controlled. A possible first framework:

  • Best Fresh Dairy
  • Best Fermented Dairy
  • Best Cheese
  • Best Traditional Dairy Product
  • Best New Product
  • Dairy Farm of the Year
  • Family Dairy Farm
  • Animal Health Excellence
  • Dairy Genetics & Breeding
  • Feed & Nutrition Excellence
  • Dairy Processor of the Year
  • Quality Excellence
  • Processing Innovation
  • Dairy Market Excellence
  • Distribution & Cold Chain Excellence
  • Dairy Farmer
  • Veterinarian
  • Dairy Professional
  • Young Dairy Professional
  • Dairy Innovation
  • Sustainability & Circularity
  • Digital Dairy
  • Outstanding Contribution to Georgian Dairy

Not every category needs to be awarded every year. An award should exist because there are credible candidates and meaningful criteria, not because the program needs a longer list.

Recognizing the Product the Consumer Experiences

Product evaluation may consider different criteria depending on category. For cheese, for example:

  • Appearance
  • Aroma
  • Flavor
  • Texture
  • Technical quality
  • Consistency
  • Product identity

Other products may require different criteria. Where relevant, evaluation can combine sensory judging, technical/compliance review and product information. Illustrative scores.

An award recognizes excellence. It does not replace food-safety compliance.

The Award will avoid implying that a sensory prize is the same as regulatory certification or laboratory approval.

Reward the System Behind the Result

A Farm of the Year award will not simply go to the farm producing the most litres. Possible criteria can include the points shown here. Similarly, a processor can be evaluated across its own set. This allows the Award to recognize balanced excellence, not one isolated metric.

Recognize the People Behind Dairy Performance

Dairy is a people-intensive industry. Professional recognition can help elevate technical careers, create role models and demonstrate that excellence exists across many occupations, not only among business owners.

      1. Farmers
      2. Veterinarians
      3. Nutritionists
      4. Breeding specialists
      5. Dairy technologists
      6. Engineers
      7. Quality professionals
      8. Technicians
      9. Commercial professionals
      10. Educators

A separate Young Dairy Professional category will be particularly valuable for encouraging the next generation.

Recognize Improvement That Creates Real Value

Innovation should not mean “new technology” alone. A strong innovation might be:

      • A simpler farm system
      • Improved calf survival
      • Better feed efficiency
      • A new processing technique
      • Digital traceability
      • Lower product loss
      • Manure recovery
      • Packaging improvement
      • A new commercial model

Innovation should be judged by usefulness and measurable impact, not novelty alone. Sustainability awards will likewise require evidence rather than marketing claims.

      Open to the Dairy Industry

Depending on category, applicants may include:

      • Farms
      • Processors
      • Brands
      • Producers
      • Distributors
      • Professionals
      • Startups
      • Technology companies
      • Service providers
      • Students / young professionals where applicable
      • Dairy Grid participants
      • Businesses outside GEO Dairy’s own network
The Award is not restricted to GEO Dairy customers.

Participation in Dairy Grid, Dairy Academy, Dairy Market or another GEO Dairy activity does not automatically provide an advantage in Award evaluation.

      A Clear Annual Process

A simple seven-stage process. The website displays the timetable clearly each year.

      1. 1Categories Announced
      2. 2Applications / Nominations Open
      3. 3Eligibility & Documentation Review
      4. 4Technical / Sensory / Evidence-Based Evaluation
      5. 5Jury Assessment
      6. 6Winners Confirmed
      7. Dairy Award Ceremony & Publication

Current award cycle: timetable to be announced

      Transparent Before the Competition Begins

      Every category will publish:

      • Eligibility
      • Evidence required
      • Judging criteria
      • Scoring weights where appropriate
      • Judging method
      • Disqualification grounds

Participants should know what excellence means before they enter.

      For example: Dairy Farm Award
      30Performance
      • Performance30%
      • Animal Health & Welfare20%
      • Milk Quality15%
      • Management & Records15%
      • Environment10%
      • Workforce / Improvement10%
The percentages are illustrative and will be finalized after category design.

Trust Is More Important Than the Trophy

Dairy Award will establish a qualified jury drawn from relevant areas.

A long jury table with nine matching chairs, folders and a sealed ballot box
      1. Dairy science
      2. Veterinary medicine
      3. Food technology
      4. Processing
      5. Sensory evaluation
      6. Engineering
      7. Business
      8. Academia
      9. Independent industry expertise
      Important governance rules will include:
      • Conflict-of-interest declarations
      • Recusal where necessary
      • Standardized scoring
      • Controlled access to entries
      • Documented decisions
      • Confidentiality

Where practical, product judging may use blind evaluation so brand reputation does not influence sensory scores.

Sponsors Support the Award, They Do Not Buy the Result

Sponsors may support the Award. They can never influence it.

      Sponsors may support:
      • Event organization
      • Prizes
      • Venue
      • Media
      • Category activities

Sponsorship must never purchase an award, influence judging or alter verification criteria.

A company will not receive preferred scoring because it:
      • advertises with GEO Dairy
      • supplies Dairy Grid
      • sells on Dairy Market
      • sponsors Dairy Award

This separation should be visible in the Award rules.

      Recognition With Commercial Value

Depending on the category, winners may receive:

      1. Dairy Award trophy
      2. Official certificate
      3. Digital winner mark
      4. Public winner profile
      5. Media visibility
      6. Presentation at the Award event
      7. Visibility within GEO Dairy channels

Recognition Connected to a Wider Dairy Ecosystem

Grid builds production. Academy builds capability. Market connects commerce. Award recognizes excellence.

      Dairy Award
      Dairy Grid

Can produce candidates demonstrating excellence in farming, processing, innovation and network performance, but receives no automatic advantage.

      Dairy Academy

Can develop people capable of achieving excellence and may recognize outstanding students, trainers or young professionals.

      Dairy Market

Can help winners become more visible to buyers and consumers.

Dairy Award: Makes high-quality performance visible across the industry.

      Celebrate the Industry Together

The annual Award could eventually become more than a trophy ceremony. It may include:

An evening award festival in a town square with a lit stage and tasting tables
      1. 01Finalist showcase
      2. 02Product tasting
      3. 03Industry presentations
      4. 04Young-professional recognition
      5. 05Innovation showcase
      6. 06Networking
      7. 07Winner announcements
      8. 08Media coverage

Over time, this could become an important annual gathering point for Georgia’s dairy community. It should still remain distinct from a broader Dairy Forum if such a program is developed in the future.

      Recognize Georgian Excellence First

The initial Dairy Award should focus on building a credible national recognition system for Georgia’s dairy industry. Once the methodology, jury structure and reputation are established, future possibilities could include regional competitions.

A respected Georgian award is more valuable than an international award nobody trusts.

But credibility should grow before geography.

The initial Dairy Award should focus on building a credible national recognition system for Georgia’s dairy industry.
